Next week will be my last week at work! So I thought I should share another story about the people I have gotten to know while working here.
A few weeks ago I had a man come in to buy a $45 box of chocolates. He comes in about once a month so I recognized him, although I never learned his name. As he was paying, he told me this: "I started a bad tradition..." I hear this a lot! Especially around Christmas. People will buy their kids chocolates for holidays and the next year, their kids will keep asking for the chocolates and be very disappointed if they don't get them! So I told him that I hear that a lot. So he told me "I started buying these chocolates for my mother, who I thought was going to die any day. That was 30 years ago. She turns 100 next week!" I was laughing so hard! I told him the chocolates were probably keeping her alive! So lesson learned, if you want to live to 100, just eat lots of chocolate!

Almost Done
David was complaining that I haven't written on my blog in awhile. He is probably one of about 3 people that actually read this, so here you go David!
I've been thinking about writing about this for a little while. As pretty much everyone who reads this already knows, we'll be moving to Utah in August. I'm not really looking forward to having no income for 5 months while David does his student teaching, but I am excited to get a fresh start somewhere new! Right now, our lives are very hectic. David is going to school, teaching cello lessons, and goes to a singles ward on campus as the ward clerk. I am working one job (and a half if you count doing a job for my mom), I have 2 callings in our ward (because they didn't think I was busy enough taking Asher to church by myself. I'm the ward music chair and a relief society pianist), and all of this while we're trying to figure out moving half our stuff into a storage unit and half of it with us to Utah. But we get to drop all that and start somewhere new! I'm kind of excited to have a break from working (I've had one type of job or another pretty much since I was 16), but I'm also sad because I've been at my job for 6 years. After that long, you tend to think of your co-workers as family! It's been so fun to get to know these women that work there. I've decided I wanted to share a few stories from working there.
One lady that works there is named Connie. I think she used to be LDS, but not so much anymore. She has a tattoo, she swears, she drinks coffee, but she is so hilarious! I love her. When I had been working there for about a year, she told me a story about her son, Jesse. One night when Jesse was driving home from work, he decided to stop at a local gas station. It was about 11 pm, and when he got out of his car, a teenage boy came up to him and asked him if he would go buy him some beer. Jesse, being a smart man, said "I can't give it to you in the parking lot! Give me some money and then go wait at the park around the corner and I'll bring it to you. That way we won't get caught." The kid thought that sounded like a great idea! So he handed Jesse a $20 bill and got in his car to drive around the corner. Jesse went inside, bought his Mountain Dew, and on his drive home he called his mom and told her that he just made $20! Connie told this story to her friend that was a cop and the cop said that if more people did that, they wouldn't have any problems with underage drinking. I was laughing so hard when she told that story! I have another story she told me about Jesse, but that will have to wait till next time. I think I'm going to miss all those ladies!

Happy Father's Day!
I had to do a post today because I think it's so very important to build up fathers! I didn't really notice how much men are put down until David started pointing it out to me. During General Conference, women get told how great we are and men get told how horrible and sinful they are. The first year we were married, on Mother's Day all the talks were about how great everyone's mom was and Father's Day was about how men need to live worthy of the priesthood. On the classical music station this week, in honor of Father's Day they did a segment on all the evil father's in opera. I think it's sad how much men are put down! My friend wrote a blog post about this and I thought it was excellent. If you want to read it, here's the link: http://livehappythoughts.blogspot.com/2014/06/fathers-we-need-them.html So this post is all about how wonderful fathers are!
One of the first things I fell in love with about David is how much he loves children. I knew it from the very beginning! He had pictures of all of his nieces and nephews on Facebook and on his phone. And the way he talked about them, you could see the love he has for each and every one of them. When I flew out to North Carolina, little Chloe called him and he talked to her for a good 15 minutes all about the time she did his hair and how he has a girlfriend and whatever else came to mind! I knew he would be an amazing father, and he sure is! I know Asher loves me and likes to be with me, but you should see his face when Dad comes home. You never saw a baby more excited to be chased, thrown on the bed (very gently...), eaten, and generally rough-housed by someone! I play with Asher, but I know that he has 10 times more fun with Dad! David has been so great with Asher. He changes diapers, he takes over when I get too tired, he has Asher for 4-5 hours every day when I'm at work, and is so patient and loving. I'm so glad that David gets to have this bonding time with Asher. He probably won't get as much time once August hits, but we'll try to make the most out of it! Thank you David for being such a loving, fun, and great example of a father!

This is one of my favorite pictures of my boys. David was so happy to become a father!
I had to include this picture. It wouldn't be fair to not have a picture of Asher screaming!

Asher Overload!
I haven't put pictures of Asher on here in a little, so here's a little overload! He had a doctor appointment yesterday. I was a little worried when I got his growth chart because it said he was 24th percentile for weight. As soon as the doctor came in the room, I told him that I promise we've been feeding him! He said he wasn't too worried because (he then flips to the height chart) all his energy was going there! He's 97th percentile for height! The doctor kept commenting on what a tall kid he was and how he looks much older than 9 months. I get that a lot. I joked around that people probably wonder why I carry my 2 year old all over the place. Heavenly Father really does know what we need, because Asher is the perfect little boy for our family!
He finally started crawling! He started with the army crawl and he just barely started crawling on all fours.
I bought this for $2! I think it's one of his favorite toys because he gets to be really noisy (and he sure loves to be noisy!) David doesn't appreciate it, but I can't take it away because of that adorable grin he gets when he plays with it!
Asher thinks it's hilarious when David gargles water (that's what the turkey sound is!). He laughs this hard almost any time David does it!
He thinks gargling is so awesome, that he started doing it himself! When he's drinking bottles he'll get a mouthful and do this. While we were at my mom's house for Mother's Day we had to show her his new trick!

He kept trying to bite the handle on the cart. I put my hand in the way. That didn't stop him...

First time at the park! He loved the swings! This is one of my favorite pictures!

After we had dinner at my mom's house, they both fell asleep in the car. It was a tiring day.

Asher and Ledger! They're 10 months apart. Asher loves to crawl after Ledger wherever he goes!

This is a smile, not crying! Asher loves to give big cheesy grins all the time. I sure hope he stays my happy, funny, loving little boy forever!

Bad Luck
I have to warn you, this is a longer post than usual! If you don't read to the end, I understand!
When I was in college, I couldn't believe how easy some people have it. I know everyone has their trials, but I don't quite believe it when some people say that if you saw everyone's trials in a pile you would instantly grab yours back up. Whenever I hear people say that, I think of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. Perchik says to him "Money is the world's curse." He replies (as I think I would!) "May the Lord smite me with it. And may I never recover." I think we are given our trials because they are meant to be hard. Something that we have a hard time handling. I have told my mom that it seems like some people are ice skating through life, where things just seem to work out for them! And then there's David and I. We have the Mitchell luck. It feels like we are army crawling through it! I feel bad for David. I have some of the worst luck in the world and it has rubbed off on him. He used to have good luck, but when we got married that changed. The school forced him to graduate so now we don't get any financial aid from the government or the school and just to make things harder on him, he can't practice his cello at our apartment even during the middle of the day because our neighbors keep complaining to our managers about it.
The last few months I have had so many things happen that it's (almost) comical! I just need to get this off my chest so I can stop thinking about it and get some sleep tonight.
Around Christmas, we were driving home from my parents house after having dinner there. I dropped David off at the apartment so I could record the weather data. I took Asher with me because he was asleep in the car seat and I didn't want to wake him up. To get to the weather station, you have to drive up this random hill on a dirt road. I did the weather, and started backing the car down the hill (there's no room to turn around up there when it's snowing). The snow was so deep and so thick and wet, that I started veering a little off course and was sucked clear off the road. And got stuck. And I've lived in Idaho long enough to know when you're kind of stuck and when there's no hope of getting out without help. I was in the latter situation. I could've called David, but it would've taken him 20 or so minutes to walk up there (our 2nd car had a dead battery...more on that later) and even when he did come, the only thing he could do was stand there with me. So I called my dad to come rescue me. I don't know what I'm going to do when we move away! My parents have rescued us many a time...And he said he would be up soon. I started trying to dig out my tires with a snow shoe (the only shovel-type thing I had and just happened to have in my car), but it wasn't working out. At this point, Asher woke up. Wonderful. And he was tired and hungry, so in a REALLY good mood. I almost started laughing at how ridiculous my situation was. Right then, an older gentleman pulled over and asked if I needed help. I wanted to kiss him! I said I did and my dad was on the way, but I didn't know how long he would be. But the man told me his brother was driving right behind him and had a tow rope and they could help. I was so incredibly grateful and knew Heavenly Father had sent them to rescue me! So these two men who had to have been in their 70's were on their hands and knees in the snow trying to figure out how to best get me out. I was trying to help, but Asher was so upset about being hungry, tired, and now cold. The man said his wife who was sitting in the car could take him while we were getting my car out. I normally don't hand my child off to strangers, but I knew he would be ok with her. By the time my dad and brother got there, they had gotten my car out. I was (and still am!) so grateful for their help. But, ever since then our car has been making weird noises that keep getting worse. So now we have to take it in to the mechanic. David says that with our luck it won't just be some screw that needs to be tightened, they'll tell us that the engine is hanging on by a thread and will need to be completely replaced. So I can't wait to do that!
With our second car, we have an '84 Bronco II. It's a clunker and is probably more work than it's worth, but when it does work, it's nice to have 2 cars. The battery died in December when we were having temperatures that were about 20 below zero. We wanted to wait till it warmed up a little before we decided to switch the battery, and then we didn't have money or time, and then I found a sticker on it one day saying that if nobody claimed it, it was going to get towed because they thought it was abandoned. So I quickly called our managers, made sure it wasn't going to get towed, and we took the battery to an auto shop. They said the battery was basically dead and to take it back to where we got it because it was probably still under our 2 year warranty. So we did. They said the sticker on the battery was the expiration for the warranty. We were about 3 days past the date. They wouldn't give us a new battery. We even looked at the other batteries they had. Some of them had stickers that would expire in the next 6 months. I feel bad for whoever gets those ones.
April was a bad month too. One night, after I had put Asher down, I decided we should get some food in our fridge so I went grocery shopping. I was so tired after a long day of work, watching Asher, and finally grocery shopping, that I was so happy that I would get to spend the rest of the night relaxing. I was getting the bags out of the back of the car when my phone slipped right out of my hands. My phone that I've had 6 months. It didn't hit the pavement too hard so I thought it would be ok. When I picked it up, I started crying. The screen was cracked. Not as bad as when I cracked my other phone's screen back in November, but still pretty bad. Bad enough that there is almost no way I'll be able to make it another year and a half before I'm eligible for a new one. I felt so horrible that I was going to cost us more money on getting a replacement. I still feel bad. David was very nice when I told him about it. I don't have the money to buy a new one out of contract, and it's hard to find a used one that still looks like it works. I did manage to find someone to fix my screen and they said they had the right color, but when I took my phone in, it was the wrong color so I have to wait a little longer. I think I'm going to superglue it to my hand when I get it fixed.
Also in April, I lost my keys. I thought they would turn up after a day or two like they usually do, but they didn't. They didn't turn up after a week. I combed through our apartment. I looked all over our car, all over the Bronco, I even emailed someone at the Idaho Falls Symphony to see if I lost them during rehearsal. They never turned up. Since my keys were the only ones that had our mail key on them (another stroke of good luck), we had to tell our apartment manager that we would need a copy of it. When I asked him if he had a spare key I could copy, he told me that they had just emptied out all the spare keys. I could ask the post office to make me one for $40, or he had someone that could do it for $20. I knew, even as I was talking to him, that I would find my keys as soon as we got our new mail keys. The next day we got a new mail key. The day after that I found my keys. Another thing I wanted to hide from David because of how bad I felt. He was also pretty nice about that, but I could tell he was getting frustrated with me.
Right after I lost my keys, the Bronco got a flat tire. It honestly looks like someone just slashed the tire because it went from full to completely flat overnight. We still have to get that fixed, but we need both of us home to do that. One to watch Asher and one to take the tire to Les Schwab. But with our schedules, usually the only time we're both home is at night and by then we're both so tired we don't want to do it. Maybe that will be our project this weekend!
Last but not least, last night I dropped the connector to David's headphones in some soup and now they're ruined. I bought him some new ones (that I found on sale!).
In closing, if any more things go wrong I will probably just take David and Asher and move to Austria where my sister says it's beautiful and lovely and no one will complain about David playing his cello too loudly. ;)

Lots of Videos!
I've taken a bunch of videos of Asher over the past few weeks. He's just so darn cute I can't help it! So enjoy watching my quirky little boy.
He's started to babble a lot more and it's so cute! It even sounds like he's saying Mama some of the time. I know he doesn't know what it means, but I still like it!
This laugh never fails to make me smile!
He actually really likes being hit by pillows, as you can see!
He loves his jumper and I love it when he sucks on his thumb!
And lastly, this is the reason he doesn't crawl...because he figured out another way to get around! He was going around in circles like this for about a half hour straight. It looks ridiculous, but it's effective! And he has the strongest abs you will ever see!

Recognition
I've been feeling a little off lately. It seems like everyone in my life is accomplishing such great things! My sister got her Doctorate, my other sister is working on her Masters, David graduated and will finish everything up this fall, and it seems like everyone else is either getting really nice new jobs or moving into new houses or other things like that. So I've felt very...stuck...lately. Like I feel like I'm not accomplishing anything. I never used to feel like that, and today I figured out why.
Up until I graduated college, I've always had some kind of feedback on my life. Usually it was grades. After every semester I would get a grade on how well I did. I could see immediate results of the work I was putting in. And if I got enough good grades, I got to graduate! But life's not like that anymore. I get up with Asher, go to work, come home and take care of Asher, put him to bed, and then I go to bed. And that's it. I don't have anyone telling me if I'm doing a good job or if I need to work on things more. I know it's all part of being an adult, but it's so hard to motivate yourself! All growing up, you have parents and coaches and teachers being your cheerleaders and telling you what an awesome job you're doing, but not so much now. I suppose I'll have to work on motivating myself. I guess I'm just impatient. And I should set more goals to work towards. Maybe that will help. Any other suggestions? I'm fresh out! But I'll keep working on it. That's my little rant for the evening. I just needed to get it out. Maybe putting those goals (once I come up with some) on here will help keep me accountable. Maybe I'll try that next...
Up until I graduated college, I've always had some kind of feedback on my life. Usually it was grades. After every semester I would get a grade on how well I did. I could see immediate results of the work I was putting in. And if I got enough good grades, I got to graduate! But life's not like that anymore. Mobile
Some children learn how to crawl or even walk pretty early. My little man has figured out a different way to get around. He's very mobile this way! He rolls over, scoots, maneuvers, and does this little hip thrust thing. It's really weird and he usually does blow spit bubbles the whole time he does it. Enjoy this little bit of entertainment!

Going's on...
I've decided that I am one of those annoying parents that just LOVES to talk about my babe! I am usually pretty reserved and don't have much that I like to share, but I can talk all day long about my little man. He really is such a bright spot in our lives! But first, my other man had something pretty cool happen this last week. On thursday he got an email saying that a guest artist was coming to perform here at BYU-I and they needed a small orchestra. Apparently a lot of their cellists bailed and so they asked David if he would join. And the concert would be Friday. As in he had 24 hours notice. It wasn't a huge deal because usually pop music like that (the artist was a pianist, William Joseph) isn't too difficult. But David could only make it to the sound check before the concert. When he got home from the sound check, he said "So...I kind of have 2 solo's..." I was super excited and kind of bummed I couldn't go! But my mom graciously offered to babysit for us on such short notice and I was able to attend. While we were driving over there David started getting nervous, which was weird because he usually doesn't care about pop music concerts because they're so easy. But he pointed out to me that it would only be his second time playing the music and didn't feel quite prepared... But anyways, he did AWESOME! I missed the beginning of Amazing Grace where David was playing all by himself, but I got the end where William Joseph, the violinist he brought with him, and David are all playing. The second piece is an original. And I had a seat in the nosebleed section (because it was a comp ticket, which are usually bad seats) so I was recording the big screen so the video is crap but the audio is pretty good. But here you go! It was even better live! And I did take a picture of David on the big screen. I was just excited to see him up there! He's famous!
And now here are some pictures of my beautiful babe!
Asher had been smacking his lips all day. David started doing it back to him and he started laughing so hard! You can see him trying to do it in the middle of the video, but he's so excited and laughing so hard it doesn't really work!
